Chinmaya Amrit Yatra and Silver Jubilee Celebrations at CMSD

An auspicious alignment of the 75th year of the Chinmaya Movement and the 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary of CMSD

Chinmaya Mission San Diego – place of Sacred Chinmaya Jyoti

Here’s a brief history of Chinmaya Mission San Diego with messages from Pujya Guruji, Pujya Swami Swaroopanandaji and Pujya Swami Shantanandaji.

San Diego holds a unique place for Chinmaya Mission members worldwide. It was here that Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda attained Mahāsamādhi on August 3, 1993, at 5:45 p.m. In that moment, San Diego became more than a location—it became sacred.

In the years that followed, a persistent thought stirred in Lakshmi Aunty’s heart: Pujya Gurudev left His Jyoti in San Diego, yet no Mission activities were taking place there. When she shared this with Pujya Swami Shantananda in 1999, Swamiji revealed that he had made a saṅkalpa at Gurudev’s bedside—that a beautiful center would arise in San Diego. This resolve began manifesting on January 28, 2001, with the inauguration of CMSD and the lighting of the Chinmaya lamp, followed by the inauguration of Chinmaya Jyoti āśrama on August 3, 2013 in the city of Poway.
Chinmaya Mission San Diego began its twenty-fifth year of celebrations in early 2025 with a series of thoughtfully planned offerings that invited reflection, gratitude, and celebration of Pujya Gurudev’s vision taking firm root in this sacred land.

The Silver Jubilee celebrations were ushered in with the Gratitude Wall during the Chinmaya Jayanti celebrations on May 8, 2025, where BV children, sevaks and sevikās were invited to submit “Gratitude notes”. BV sevaks and sevikās also shared heartfelt insights into how the āśrama has transformed their lives through the grace of Pujya Gurudev.

In July 2025, the 21st Summer Youth Camp, themed ‘Going on a Pilgrimage’ beautifully affirmed Chinmaya Jyoti as a living tīrtha kṣetra—Om Tīrthasvarūpāya Namaḥ. Later that month, members gathered for a CMSD Journey Q&A session, revisiting the milestones that shaped CMSD center.
The celebrations continued through the fall with the ‘Sacred Serpents’ program in October and a Countdown to CMSD25 video series in November through January 2026, where short presentations during Sunday assembly offered glimpses of CMSD’s evolution—from a saṅkalpa into the serene āśrama nestled in the foothills of Tapovana Giri. These visual memories reminded everyone of the tireless and selfless efforts of Lakshmi Aunty, Sukumar Uncle, and the many CMSD sevaks and sevikās who transformed San Diego into a vibrant spiritual abode—Chinmaya Jyoti!

With messages of blessings from Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda and Pujya Swami Swaroopananda, the Silver Jubilee celebrations reached its pinnacle with a week-long Jñāna Yajña ‘Bhagavad Gītā Saptāh’ by Pujya Swami Shantananda from January 27 to February 1, 2026.
As Pujya Swami Swaroopananda noted in his congratulatory message for this milestone, “The coming together of twenty-five years of CMSD with seventy-five years of the Chinmaya Movement is a clear sign of divine grace and of the unbroken flow of knowledge that Gurudev set in motion. Such auspicious concurrence strengthens our faith in the enduring power of his Vision and Mission.”

Divine Jnana Yagna marks the beginning of the celebrations

CMSD formally inaugurated its much awaited 25th Anniversary celebrations on January 27. Though the evening air was brisk, the mood was warm and festive as families gathered along the kolam-adorned pathway to welcome Pujya Gurudev and Swami Shantananda in the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Yatra. Upon arrival, Swamiji and Sukumar Uncle reverentially escorted a life-size portrait of Pujya Gurudev toward the āśrama, accompanied by the vibrant beats of the Chinmaya Ḍiṇḍima Youth Band and Lezim dancers to ‘Āo Gurudev.’ The entrance, framed by a radiant archway and commemorative displays marked CMSD’s twenty-fifth anniversary and the seventy-fifth year of the Chinmaya Movement.

Following the traditional pūrṇa kumbha welcome, Swamiji proceeded to Praṇava Nilayam while Gurudev’s portrait was enshrined in the atrium to preside over the week. A banner above bore the Gītā verse “Gītā sugītā kartavyā…”—apt for the theme chosen by Swamiji: Sampūrṇa Gītā, a sweeping vision of all eighteen chapters. The inaugural Jyoti was then lit by Swamiji, followed by Guru Pādukā and Śrī Kṛṣṇa pūjās. Sukumar Uncle and Lakshmi Aunty reflected on Swamiji’s guiding role from CMSD’s conception to this sacred milestone. In a deeply moving welcome to begin the yajña, Lakshmi Aunty expressed what many felt in their hearts—that Swami Shantananda was Gurudev himself in pratyakṣa rūpa. Aunty recounted the early events that sparked grassroots activities in San Diego, the association with Swamiji, and the journey that ultimately culminated in the consecration of the āśrama.

Swamiji opened the series with a simple yet profound introduction to the Śrīmadbhagavadgītā. Across seven lectures over six days, Swamiji unfolded the essence of the Gītā through carefully selected verses. Each evening began with soulful bhajans by Chinmaya Swaranjali, followed by Swamiji’s discourse. His gentle pace, lucid explanations, and humorous yet relatable anecdotes helped the audience absorb and retain the teachings with ease. The evenings concluded with devotees seeking Swamiji’s blessings, followed by sumptuous prasādam for all attendees. In a deeply uplifting atmosphere, seekers were immersed in systematic and inspiring unfoldment of the Lord’s teachings, fitting preparation for the grand culmination.

The concluding Grand Finale program ‘Saṅkhyā Mahimā in Sanātana Dharma’ presented on February 1, 2026, envisioned and guided by Lakshmi Aunty, reflected CMSD’s hallmark style—bringing forth scriptural wisdom through yajña-bhāva. Adults and children participated with devotion and joy. Months of practice shone in their confidence and in their commitment to offer Unto Him Our Best. Through powerful words, meaning behind numbers, engaging quizzes, and inspiring insights into Sanātana Dharma, the audience was both enriched and uplifted. What a way to enter the next phase of CMSD!

A special highlight was the commemorative Souvenir released by Pujya Swami Shantananda on this occasion—a landmark publication chronicling CMSD’s journey from saṅkalpa to sthāpanā. It stands as a treasured record of gratitude for the past and a benchmark of inspiration for the future.
